Amy Winehouse and Adele

Our weekly round-up of the weird and wonderful world of pop music...

New Year, new pop stars... please? We promise to be good. The old lot are getting so tawdry, it’s almost no fun taking the mickey out of them anymore. Almost. Look at Britney Spears, for instance – this week dragged dribbling and twitching from her gaff after a dispute with K-Fed’s heavies. It’s time to turn discreetly in the other direction, isn’t it?

And what of Winehouse, tabloid mainstay since Pete Doherty became boring? Amy is pencilled in to headline the Grammy Awards over in the States next month, but who thinks she’s going to make it? Here’s a source close to our Ames: “The only potential problem is that Amy will need a US visa.” Well, as long as that’s the “only” problem. We know how flexible US customs can be.

It’s been a while since we checked on Madonna, mind you, no matter how old a pop star she is. This week Madge has been wowing the Jodhpur locals with folk dances as her global adoption tour takes in India. She’s been blessed with glowing reports on her suitability as a mother from the Malawian authorities and is now rumoured to be heading for Cambodia for her next swoop. She’ll be moving into a shoe soon.

Oh, here’s a new one - Adele from Tottenham. The hotly tipped chanteuse has won the BBC’s Sound of 2008 survey of 150 music critics (hang on – we don’t remember getting that call) and looks forward to a future where she isn’t the new Winehouse: “I hope it’s always about the music and I hope I don’t become scandalous.” We hope so too, cherub.
